Why do writers write? What do writers write?
In our classroom we will be working on gaining Independence and stamina during writing. In order to do this we will work all types of writing this year, set goals, and write a lot. . Writes' write stories, letters, reminders, reading response essays, journals, e-mails, poems, and more.
Crafting True StoriesThis unit, students are developing their narrative writing skills by "Crafting True Stories" and writing up a storm, using a storyteller's voice, setting goals, editing as we go, rehearsing for writing, and developing strong leads.
Baby Literary EssaysThis unit will teach students to take ideas about their reading, support these ideas with evidence directly from the story, and write an essay from these ideas.

Changing the World: Persuasive Speeches, Petitions, and EditorialsIn this unit, students will have the opportunity to engage in short and longer-term writing projects by writing persuasive speeches, petitions and editorials. They will learn to use their voices for power with well supported opinions.
Writing About ResearchThis unit will link our reading and writing units together. Students will be reading about animals. They will be learning to read, research, and take notes. They will then use these notes to develop their Informational writing skills. They will publish All about books using facts and research.

The Art of Informational WritingIn this unit, students are developing their informational writing skills by becoming teachers. They are learning about different organizational structures for writing, using text features in our writing, and researching facts. They will publish All About books using these skills.
Once Upon a Time: Adapting and Writing Fairy TalesIn this unit, students are continuing to develop their narrative writing skills by adapting fairy tales. They will need to read and annotate fairy tales to recognize the qualities of a fairy tale. They need to decide what they will change and how each change will affect the course of their story. from their students will work to make creative stories, using figurative language.
